CES 2015: The charger that boosts battery in seconds

Storedot leader Doron Myersdorf shows his quick charger unit

I just witness what looks like a modern technological wonders.

Samsung smartphone is estimated that close to full capacity juice in less time than it takes to boil a kettle was charged.

Israeli start-up after the demo, Storedot, has a similar trick before displayed.

But previous demo booked online eight months ago included a battery often thicker than the phone itself, as well as an oversized charger - the technician practical for actual use.

This time is involved, the phone is not higher than normal, and the loader is quite thin and

The demo was shown in October at Storedot Tel Aviv-Center

There are some trade-offs involved, but charging to 100 times faster than previously capable devices has the potential to revolutionize the way we use mobile phones, tablets, laptops and portable Tech.

However Storedot ambitions are even greater.

Organic batteries

The BBC is already the first new kit, apart from technology industry leaders who sign confidentiality agreements have shown.

This is not something that existing equipment can be upgraded, as most phones are fried served by the current 40 amps, the current version of the charger.

Furthermore, involves the use of a new type of battery that contains specially synthesized organic molecules.

"We reactions in the battery, non-traditional responses that can be loaded from us very quickly, ions moving from an anode to a cathode at a rate that was not possible before we have these materials," said Doron Myersdorf, corporate executive chef.

Storedot is a typical smartphone battery in less than a minute charging 2017

He added that the US phone manufacturers, South Korea, China and Japan have already begun discussions to be enabled or buy exclusive rights to the technology and has 17 meeting at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this year in Las Vegas "all great players."

But Mr Myersdorf also recognizes that much remains to be done before the technology is ready for the consumer.

Storedot 2017 aims to adjust the energy density - the amount of energy stored per kilogram - its own batteries, lithium-ion and commonly found in current devices.

Prototypes of the Company currently provide about a third of that rate, ie the combined standard size used in the demo will take 900mAh juice, and takes several times a day, they have been used, although only two minutes to do now charged each time.

The company also presented a 2,000mAh battery, which took three minutes to recharge, but makes the phone that she had placed accommodate 5mm (0.2in) thick for normal range.

In 2017 Storedot period also aims at current charging time to be reduced by half.

Abramovich backing

At this point, it is probably wise to offer a caveat.

The tests involved BBC presented to prove a graphical display, the batteries were loaded more quickly available.

It would be relatively easy to fake, and Mr. Myersdorf admits his scientific claims have yet to be evaluated.

But its mandate and Chief Technology Officer, Prof. visits Simon Litsyn. The two key roles held in Sandisk, they helped a leader in flash memory technology.

Storedot said it aims to reduce the size of the charger also

In addition, the company has already raised $ 48.5 million (CHF 32.1 million), which means $ 10 million that were increased asset management company private Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich. The BBC understands Samsung is one of the other investors.

However, an observer of the industry remains cautious.

"Battery technology is again organizing the consumer electronics industry is the biggest challenge right now," said Ben Wood of CCS Insight advice.

"A major breakthrough application should always be viewed with skepticism, because there are so many times, promised before and we have not a solution.

"But if that's what this company claim to offer is even made, it would have a huge impact, as the amount of battery-hungry devices connected people use in their daily life increases exponentially."

'Game-changer'

The increase in battery life has become the Holy Grail of Gadget Industry

Certainly CES with companies and offers a multitude of portable batteries so users raced across the day, while lipstick size Chargers emergency refills $ 500 (£ 300) backpack, the more material on power may once.

We were able to stimulate smartphones in less than a minute the need to purchase these external batteries to reduce - and we might be more willing supercomputing applications and games, but also adopt smart watches and other mobile tech will help .

But Storedot a larger plan.

"We just work electric vehicles," says Myersdorf.

"And we want to show a model of a car that can recharge in three minutes in the year.

"We are 100% sure that we can deliver because the know-how, you take a cell and combine thousands of them all was done by Tesla.

"The user experience as would the supply, but without smoke.

"It would really stimulate the adoption of electric vehicles. It would be a game changer."
