Smoking levels reach all-time low in the United States

Americans kick the habit in record numbers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the proportion of adults who smoke cigarettes on a historic low in the United States. From 2005 to 2008, the number of smokers in the United States declined from 45.1 to 42,100,000 euros. Today, only 17.8 percent of Americans over the age of 18 smoke cigarettes - a record low.
The annual report, released Wednesday by the CDC, smoking was the proportion of smokers admitted that smoking daily fall. In addition, smokers smoke fewer cigarettes per day. Health experts welcomed these details with lukewarm enthusiasm.

"Although smokers smoke fewer cigarettes, leaving smears few cigarettes a day, instead of completely not produce significant health benefits," Brian King, chief scientific adviser to the Office of Smoking and Health CDC, noted in a statement released by the CDC.

But overall, the message is positive and Norman H. Edelman researcher said there are educational efforts on evidence and tobacco taxes work.

"People are learning more and more about the terrible consequences of smoking," Edelman, professor of preventive medicine and internal Stony Brook University, Newsweek said. "People are easy to understand how deadly cigarettes are and this is the usually too expensive. "

The study used data from the National Health Interview Survey from the CDC, also found 70 percent of those who still want to stop smoking.

But while smoking rates are declining in adults, some tobacco products are becoming increasingly popular with young people. Recent research has shown, e-cigarettes and hookah use rates are increasing among teens and young adults.

"We have no idea what will be the long-term impact [of the e-cigarette smoke]. We do not know that there is too little evidence to assume that they are safer than cigarettes" Edelman said. "We are excited about e-cigarettes as a way for young people, young people, introduced in addiction to nicotine hit."
